Exhalation - Ted Chiang
Some quite fascinating explorations of science, religion, morality, free-will, faith, consciousness, and artificial intelligence are contained within these brief 360 pages of speculative fiction from Ted Chiang.
The themes and alternate realities explored within this collection of short stories very much appealed to my sensibilities. And whilst I don’t mind reading short stories, I often find them lacking in comparison to a novel; the reader in me longs for more than a concept, a glimpse in the life of a character, or a story of a singular event or realisation.
Some stories contained within Exhalation are more fleshed out than others, but, in fact, it was the brevity of a few that added to their impact. For a writer to condense a point that can offer the mind so much to think about in a couple of scenes is an incredible achievement, and there is certainly much to enjoy contained within these few pages.
