Exhalation - Ted Chiang

Exhalation - Ted Chiang

Some quite fascinating explorations of science, religion, morality, free-will, faith, consciousness, and artificial intelligence are contained within these brief 360 pages of speculative fiction from Ted Chiang. ⁣

The themes and alternate realities explored within this collection of short stories very much appealed to my sensibilities. And whilst I don’t mind reading short stories, I often find them lacking in comparison to a novel; the reader in me longs for more than a concept, a glimpse in the life of a character, or a story of a singular event or realisation.

Some stories contained within Exhalation are more fleshed out than others, but, in fact, it was the brevity of a few that added to their impact. For a writer to condense a point that can offer the mind so much to think about in a couple of scenes is an incredible achievement, and there is certainly much to enjoy contained within these few pages. ⁣
